Building on the 2004 U.S. National Tour, the
Spirit of Fèsreturns for
its second edition from October 7 to 29,
2006. Under the theme of Paths to
Hope, some of the world’s most renowned
musicians gather in the U.S. to collaborate
and perform in 15 cities throughout the country
to celebrate the human spirit, cultural diversity,
and bring awareness to the distinctions and
common ground within cultures. The concert program continues the tradition
introduced in the 2004 Tour with a focus on
artists from the three Abrahamic faiths – Judaism,
Christianity and Islam – with the addition this
year of music from the sacred ancient
tradition of Hinduism. Come and hear rarely
heard music of the Andalusian Jewish heritage
by Gerard Edery; travel to the Middle East with
virtuoso Palestinian American oud and violin
player Zafar Tawil; Feel the intricate world
rhythms of Lebanese-American percussionist Jamey
Haddad; Experience the collaboration between
these musicians and New York Gregorian chants
vocalist Susan Hellauer, founding member of
the medieval music ensemble Anonymous 4, and
classical carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam from
south India; immerse yourself in the sight and
sounds of Sufi songs and dances performed by
the ten-member Daqqa of Taroudant, direct from
Morocco.
To weave the essence of the Fès Festival’s Giving
a Soul to Globalization Forum into the Tour,
a full complement of programs is offered under
the theme of Living our Values in a selection
of the Tour cities. These include panel discussions
with a broad range of local speakers to stimulate
conversations about regionally specific approaches
to vital global issues. Other activities include
master classes and children’s programs.
